Sign of the Times – All Gender Bathrooms – New California Laws

California has long been a leader in protecting and affirming the rights of all its residents. This year Governor Brown signed Senate Bill 179, the historic Gender Recognition Act, which recognizes non-binary as a legal gender, codifying the rights of people who are not male or female. This follows in the footsteps of a companion law, Assembly Bill 1732*, which requires single-stall bathrooms to be identified as all-gender.

To promote awareness of these new laws, the Diversity Center has a special offer for Downtown Santa Cruz businesses an opportunity to conveniently meet the new signage requirements and be seen as a leader in making our community truly inclusive. The Diversity Center is giving away 25 attractive, gender inclusive signs (photo attached) and will list those businesses that receive them in their next newsletter, which will encourage community members who are LGBTQ+ and allies to shop, eat, and support them.

We hope your business will accept this offer and adopt gender-inclusive bathroom signs  Please join us in making all of our neighbors and visitors feel welcome in Santa Cruz. If your business would like to receive a free “All Gender Bathroom” sign to be installed between Monday, January 15th and Friday, January 19th, please call the Diversity Center’s Volunteer Coordinator at (831) 425-5422×111 or email

Thank you for joining us!

*AB 1732, effective March 1, 2017, requires all single-user toilet facilities in any business establishment, place of public accommodation, or government agency to be identified as all-gender. The bill authorizes inspectors, building officials, or other local officials responsible for code enforcement to inspect for compliance with these provisions during any inspection. Read more here
