- Kate McGarry / Keith Ganz Duo
Tickets: $18/Adv $21/Door
“sure intonation, elastic phrasing and the ability to function as an instrument” – Down Beat
Grammy-nominated vocalist Kate McGarry has managed to attract the attention of fans well outside the realm of jazz, which makes sense, since her work has always transcended idiomatic limitations. Her eclectic muse takes root amid Brazilian classics, jazz standards, and more than a few surprisingly unlikely popular compositions. Ever since pairing up a few years back with guitarist Keith Ganz, the duo has departed on an ever-evolving tack into poetic minimalism that eschews cliché, aspiring only to the essence of the lyric.
McGarry came up alongside nine brothers and sisters in coastal Massachusetts. Her families’ passion for music inspired her to craft a unique voice from a very young age. She would continue on to advanced musical studies with Doctor Horace Boyer and the inimitable Archie Shepp. When McGarry entered the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, both professors mentored the up-and-coming vocalist and assisted her in completion of a Bachelors degree in Jazz and African-American music. After graduation, she relocated to California and began the experiential leg of her journey into Jazz.
McGarry cut her teeth with performances at Los Angeles venues like Catalina’s and the Jazz Bakery. A debut bandleader recording was met with minimal fanfare, and as the turn of the century drew near McGarry paid the bills with sideman and session efforts. After a two year sabbatical at a spiritual ashram, Kate returned to the east coast and began working and living in New York. Within a year she had recorded Show Me. In spite of its independent release, the record made an impact and eventually landed her a contract with Palmetto Records, which re-released it in 2003. Big label recognition gained the burgeoning artist a “foot in the door” on the jazz scene, but she gained similar acclaim well outside that realm. Even Billboard magazine published positive reviews for the McGarry’s “decidedly alternative approach”.
North Carolina native Keith Ganz relocated to New York years ago and quickly gained renown for his unorthodox approach to jazz guitar. His acoustic work is particularly formidable and has garnered praise from all corners of the critical realm. The New York Times once flattered him with a descriptor of “Pat Metheny-like”, Juice magazine has remarked on his “guitar work to die for,” while Jazz Police refers to him as “an inventive, lyrical guitarist.” Whatever the case, he quite literally met his match in Kate McGarry.
Instantly recognizing an extraordinary musical connection, the two have since become husband and wife, ceaselessly cultivating an otherworldly folk-informed approach to jazz. Ganz and McGarry’s gift for musical communication reached a new plateau of excellence with their most recent Palmetto release Less Is More (2008), which provides the repertoire for this eagerly awaited appearance.

No Jazztix or Comps
“sharp, rhythmic angles and tangles of slight distortion” – Jazz Times
Over the course of a career that has featured thrilling endeavors into every nook and cranny of the jazz vernacular, John Scofield has cultivated trademark sound effects and huge tone, accompanied a veritable "who's who" of leaders and sidemen, and pushed the envelopes of funk and even electronica. Nevertheless, he’s always been the quintessential “guitarist’s guitarist.” And for those who long for his seemingly bygone days of soaring over a hard-hitting bop rhythm section, lament no longer. Thanks to the able accompaniment of Mulgrew Miller, Ben Street and Kendrick Scott, Scofield’s New Jazz Quartet swings with authority.
Joining Miles Davis in 1982, Scofield deeply influenced the trumpet legend’s pop-tinged take on the genre. His most acclaimed work has surfaced in the years hence, with more than a few heavy-hitting post-bop combos serving as favorite foils. This one is no exception.
Mulgrew Miller was very young when he took to the piano; as a boy, he came up playing gospel at church and R&B at local dances. While he dabbled in jazz as a teenager, it was a television program featuring Oscar Peterson that set his mind to genuinely learning the idiom. Miller’s sideman efforts have ranged from Art Blakey, Ron Carter and Freddie Hubbard to Joe Lovano and Stefon Harris. Lately, he leads a stellar trio with a number of acclaimed releases on the Maximum Jazz label.
The son of a jazz saxophonist and mouthpiece engineer, bassist Ben Street likewise got an early start. He studied extensively with Dave Holland and Miroslav Vitous at the New England Conservatory before working as a sideman with Sam Rivers, Ben Monder, Mark Turner and Kurt Rosenwinkel.
Houston born and raised, drummer Kendrick Scott broke into music at his parent’s church. He attended the city’s famed High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, where he earned a Clifford Brown/Stan Getz Fellowship and a full scholarship to Berklee College. Not surprisingly, Scott has since become a hot commodity, performing with the likes of Joe Lovano, Lizz Wright and Pat Metheny. He currently leads his own ensemble (Kendrick Scott Oracle) and was recently nominated for two Grammys for his contributions to Terence Blanchard’s A Tale of God’s Will (Blue Note, 2007.)

- JOE LOVANO US FIVE
Tickets:
$25.00/Adv $28.00/Door
No Jazztix or Comps
It’s fair to say he is one of the greatest musicians in jazz history.” –The New York Times
What greater tribute? When jazz-giant Steve Kuhn, who was one of the first piano players for John Coltrane, put together a reverential Coltrane-tribute album, Mostly Coltrane, in 2009, he selected Joe Lovano as front sax player on that album. No greater honor could befall this man whom The New York Times has called, “One of the greatest musicians in jazz history.” Lovano, with his pork pie hat, bushy goatee, and rounded glasses personifies the renaissance bebop sax man. His style of play synthesizes the classic jazz art form while at the same time releasing shocking overhead brassy alto kite flying, soaring, diving, and challenging thrills and shrills. Often using two percussionists simultaneously, Lovano’s groups demand what one reviewer has called, “Big Ears.” Using exactly this same group of players, Joe Lovano Us Five is the same group that recorded the much-heralded Folk Art album in early 2009.
Appearing with Joe Lovano Us Five that night will be one of his most accomplished students—not a sideman, but a side-woman who, through her dynamic stage presence and stylistic playing, is reason enough to come to this show: bassist Esperanza Spalding. Spalding is a hypnotic and naturally beautiful person who would not seem at first large enough to “man”-handle a stand-up bass, but the bass, like the audience, is putty in her hands. She sings harmonics and dances while she plays, creating the illusion that a choir is backing Lovano. Also on stage will be the venerable pianist-composer James Weidman, a 20 year stage veteran who has toured with Abbey Lincoln and Kevin Mahogany, among others. The quintet is rounded-out via the unorthodox stroke of adding not one, but two percussionist, Francisco Mela and Otis Brown III.
The hot-handed Cuban drummer Francesco Mela is on the faculty at Berklee School of Music, and his album “Melao” was named “Best Debut Album of ‘06” by All About Jazz New York. Second drummer, Otis Brown III, is a key spiritual as well as musical ingredient in the successful formula of Joe Lovano Us Five. Brown, though revered for his musical talents has a divine ace up his sleeve: “I’m a man of God,” Brown says. “I live for God, my family, and music.” Brown’s inspiration comes across in the form of unmitigated joy, an infectious joy that first lights up his stage family, then quickly spreads to the audience until beaming faces abound.

- Antonio Sanchez & Migration, Featuring David Binney, Donny McCaslin & Scott Colley
Tickets: $20/Adv $23/Door
Three-time Grammy winner Antonio Sanchez left his home in Mexico City to attend Boston’s Berklee College. He soon took the New York scene by storm, working with a cast of greats including Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Paquito D’Rivera and Danilo Perez. Sanchez’s innovative approach to both modern jazz and contemporary Latin percussion make him a coveted commodity in both camps. He’s in finest form at the helm of this group, which features long-time collaborator bassist Scott Colley backing the unparalleled saxophone front-line of David Binney and (Santa Cruz native) Donny McCaslin.
Sanchez started playing drums at the age of five, and was performing professionally by the time he was a teenager. A tremendous inborn affinity for music prompted him to pursue formal training after high school; he enrolled and was accepted at the National Conservatory in Mexico City’s Polanco Section. Here he earned a degree in classical piano, before relocating to Boston in 1993. Upon graduating from Berklee’s Jazz Studies program, magna cum laude, Antonio was awarded a scholarship to the New England Conservatory, where he was fortunate enough to study with Danilo Perez.
Besides the obvious benefits of apprenticing with a certified jazz master, Sanchez got a glowing recommendation when Paquito D’Rivera asked Perez about a potential drummer to accompany him in Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nations Orchestra. And this illustrious entry into the American professional scene was only the beginning; Danilo later invited Antonio to join his own trio, which garnered a Grammy nomination for the record Motherland (Polygram, 2000.) Around the same time, Sanchez caught the ear of Pat Metheny, who would eventually subject him to a grueling series of auditions prior to hiring him on for a particularly successful run. In fact, the group’s first release, Speaking of Now (Warner Brothers, 2002) took the 2003 Grammy Award for “Best Contemporary Jazz Album.” Sanchez remains Metheny’s first-call percussionist to this day.
California-born bassist Scott Colley relocated to New York in the late 1980’s. He got his foot in the jazz door backing Carmen McRae, Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Jordan and Roy Hargrove. Colley has since recorded half a dozen titles as leader and collaborated with a laundry list of legends including Jim Hall and Joe Henderson. Saxophonist David Binney can be heard on groundbreaking records by the likes of Bobby Previte, Uri Caine and Medeski, Martin and Wood. Jazz Times has credited him with “adventurous, original music” and he’s even been awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, which financed a bandleader debut entitled Point Game (Owl Records, 1989.) Santa Cruz’s very own Donny McCaslin took his jazz cues from his father, an accomplished pianist / vibraphonist. He’s gained renown for more recent work with Dave Douglas, John Patitucci, Pat Metheny and Brian Blade, and is regarded by critics and fans alike as a peerless tenor-man at the top of his game. This appearance presents compositions from Antonio Sanchez’s brand new CD.
ADVANCE TICKETS at Logos Books & Records, 1117 Pacific Ave., 427-5100; On-line at www.kuumbwajazz.org or by phone (866) 55-TICKETS.

- BEYOND THERAPY
SANTA CRUZ ACTORS’ THEATRE PROUDLY PRESENTS…..
BEYOND THERAPY
By Christopher Durang
Directed by Gerry Gerringer
Friday February 26th through March19
Fewer things are funnier than watching other people’s desperate deeds and Durang’s wild play is, first and foremost, an uproarious comedy. The play revolves around Prudence (Julia Cunningham), an attractive yet insecure writer for People magazine and Bruce (Nathan Caracter), a ridiculously self-absorbed bi-sexual lawyer given to hilarious crying jags. They meet through a personals ad and the madly unstable Bruce proclaims on their first date that he wants to marry and procreate with Prudence and that his live-in gay lover, Bob (Jacob Cribbs), will “live over the garage and it will be wonderful. Throw into the mix Prudence’s lecherous, libidinous therapist Dr. Stewart Framington (Christopher Palermo), who suffers from a massive Marlboro man complex, and Bruce’s equally nutty, Snoopy - loving, space cadet of a therapist (Suzanne Schrag) and the ensuing dysfunction pounces from the stage with hysterical inspiration.
Tickets may be purchased at www.brownpapertickets.com or by calling (831) 425-PLAY. They will also be available one hour before curtain at the theater boxoffice 1001 Center Street, Santa Cruz.
Other shows in the Actors’ Theatre’s 25th anniversary season include the Eight Tens @ 8:00 ten-minute play festival (Jan. 15 - Feb. 14) Festival Director Brian Spencer; Rabbit Hole (May 14 - June 6) written b>y David Lindsay-Abaire and directed by Victoria Hue.

- Bookshop Santa Cruz’s Community Book Group: Wicked
Led by Julie Minnis with a discussion with John Dizikes
Book Choice: Wicked by Gregory Maguire
*please note 7:00pm start time of this event
Our next Community Book Group celebrates Gregory Maguire’s Wicked. Following the traditions of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, John Gardner and J.R.R. Tolkien, Wicked is a richly woven tale that takes us to the darker side of the rainbow as novelist Gregory Maguire chronicles the Wicked Witch of the West's odyssey through the complex world of Oz -- where people call you wicked if you tell the truth. First published in 1995, the novel was called a work of vision and re-vision. Fifteen years later, Wicked is not only a best-selling novel, but it’s also been made into a hit Broadway play. The Chicago Sun says this of the play, “Wicked" has worked its magic the old-fashioned way: not with reviews or awards or heavy marketing, but by connecting with audiences through its accessible music, story and characters… the show's themes -- the rewards and trials of friendship, outsiderness vs. popularity, courage in the face of an oppressive system -- have struck a deep chord in theatergoers....
Our Book Group facilitator Julie Minnis will be joined by UCSC’s emeritus professor of American Studies, John Dizikes, (who is also a National Book Critics Circle Award winner for his book, Opera in America: A Cultural History, as well as a self-proclaimed Broadway enthusiast) to discuss the book, and then carry things a step further by talking about the Broadway play. Can any book become a musical? Is there something in the story that Maguire tells that allows it to carry over to sound and movement? Is this story indicative of a new style of Broadway, or is there something familiar in it compared to yesterday’s hits? Join us as we discuss the nuances of the story, sound, and stage surrounding Maguire’s Wicked.
This is sure to be a night filled with insight, laughter, and dialogue you won’t want to miss!

- GENEEN ROTH: Women Food and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything
Bookshop Santa Cruz is honored to welcome best-selling writer and teacher Geneen Roth to discuss her newest book. The way you eat is inseparable from your core beliefs about being alive. No matter how sophisticated or wise or enlightened you believe you are, how you eat tells all. The world is on your plate. When you begin to understand what prompts you to use food as a way to numb or distract yourself, the process takes you deeper into realms of spirit and to the bright center of your own life. Rather than getting rid of or instantly changing your conflicted relationship with food, Women Food and God is about welcoming what is already here, and contacting the part of yourself that is already whole-- divinity itself.
Please join us for this reading, signing, discussion and Q&A. This is sure to be a night that will be informative, moving, and insightful; not one to miss!

Prestigious public and private art collections including American Pharmaceuticals, Nissin Foods of Japan, Pepsi Cola, the collections of numerous entertainers and CEOs, and the St Louis Museum in St. Paul, Minnesota, feature Scoppettone's unique interpretations of traditional themes and subject matter.

Scoppettone combines concepts developed by the impressionist masters with his own talents and vision to create paintings that are distinguished by brilliant color and vibrant brushwork.
