DakhaBrakha’s theatrical performances take the form of a refreshing and bold blend of Eastern European folk heritage and contemporary sounds. This quartet of astute vocalists/multi-instrumentalists from Kiev is an enthusiastic ambassador of Ukrainian culture and music. DakhaBrakha’s impressive flair for the whimsical has won kudos from the likes of Rolling Stone who remarked that at their Bonnaroo appearance the group “had one of the most responsive crowds of the weekend.” With their band name meaning “give/take” in Ukrainian, the group was created ten years ago and has thankfully been “giving” to audiences ever since. Although easy to label it Eastern European folk music, the members of the group are exceptional musicians who employ folk instruments from the world over, including Africa, Australia, the Middle East and India. It’s a transnational approach rooted in Ukrainian culture and melodies, and the group presents a rhythmic and at times hypnotic sound.
