If you haven’t seen them yet, you probably will soon. Downtown Streets Team – Santa Cruz is up and running and hitting the streets picking up trash and debris.
Downtown Streets Team is a volunteer work experience program providing employment development, extended case management, and basic needs stipends to men and women experiencing homelessness. The “Teams” work in the community doing beautification and other community benefit work.
You will begin to see team members wearing bright yellow shirts and walking through the downtown picking doing litter abatement and light cleaning. Initial team members have already expressed how empowering it is to hear downtown business owners, police, rangers and community members to stop and thank them for the work they are doing.
The Program is funded through multiple contracts with the City of Santa Cruz, as well as private donations from businesses and individuals.
Individuals interested in participating in the program can drop in a weekly team meeting every Thursday at 12:30, at the 418 Project, 418 Front Street.
If you would like to make a donation, learn about hiring team members or just get more information about the program, you can go to StreetsTeam.org or email Project Manager, Greg Pensinger – Greg@streetsteam.org.
