Avishai Cohen at Kuumbwa Jazz

September 11 @ 7:00 pm

$25 - $30

Trumpeter Avishai Cohen, voted a Rising Star in the Downbeat Critics Poll for four years in a row, debuts compositions from his latest recording Cross My Palm With Silver.  The New York Times compares Avishai’s style to that of the legendary Clifford Brown, praising him as “an assertive, accomplished trumpeter with a taste for modernism.” A former member of the SFJAZZ Collective for six years, he also plays in The 3 Cohens sextet with his older siblings – clarinet sensation Anat and saxophonist Yuval – and sometimes in the Mingus Dynasty ensemble. His latest quartet, featuring pianist Yonathon Avishai, bassist Barak Mori, and drummer Nasheet Waits, takes modern music to a new level of creativity.

Hailing from Tel Aviv, Israel, Cohen has been performing since he was ten years old. Initally influenced by the music traditions of Israel and the Middle East, he absorbed jazz influences from his father’s record collection during his childhood. As a young performer, he toured with the Young Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra and prominent Israeli pop musicians before receiving a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. His third-place finish in the 1997 Thelonious Monk Jazz Trumpet Competition established Cohen as an up-and-coming talent to watch. After moving to New York, he became a regular performer at the legendary Smalls nightclub where a new generation of players were experimenting and perfecting their artistry.

By 2002, Cohen was leading his own groups and recording sessions. His debut album The Trumpet Player received high praise from all corners of the jazz world. Since then he has released seven albums, Cross My Palm With Silver is his eighth and most ambitious opus to date. Hot House Jazz magazine says that Cohen has, “… the virtuosity and stylistic range of a trumpeter who’s one of the most exciting voices on the horn to emerge in this new century.”
