Partners reunite for a third summer of Paws in the Park along the Santa Cruz Riverwalk
SANTA CRUZ, CA – August 8, 2017 – The third summer of the Riverwalk dog walk series Paws in the Park is back. BirchBark Foundation, Coastal Watershed Council and WOOFPACK831 have teamed up for a third year to offer a free, monthly dog walk series to all dog owners to encourage people and pets to exercise at the Santa Cruz Riverwalk. With growing attendance and community interest, the walk has a new meeting location this year along the Riverwalk at Gateway Plaza behind PetSmart.
Paws in the Park, a community dog walk series, was first launched in 2015 to build community around dogs and to bring more awareness to and engagement with the Santa Cruz Riverwalk, a city park along the lower San Lorenzo River in downtown Santa Cruz. In observing parks usage in 2015, the Coastal Watershed Council noticed that few dog walkers were visiting the Riverwalk. Through this series dog walkers were reintroduced to this community space, rediscovered the river and what a resource this can be for downtown Santa Cruz. Since August 2015, an ongoing study of park usage has measured a 24% increase in dog walkers along the Santa Cruz Riverwalk.
Each Paws in the Park dog walk occurs on the 3rd Sunday of the month May through September. The meeting location is along the Riverwalk at Gateway Plaza by PetSmart on River St. in Santa Cruz. Walks begin at 10:00 a.m. with rules, directions and free training advice from WOOFPACK831. Participants walk a 1.5 mile loop around the Riverwalk at a leisurely pace. All dogs must be well behaved and on 6 foot leashes in compliance with park rules.
The Coastal Watershed Council is a leading organization responsible for preserving and protecting watersheds on California’s Central Coast through watershed monitoring, education and stewardship. The Coastal Watershed Council formed the San Lorenzo River Alliance in December 2013 as a community partnership with the goal of bringing more positive attention to and engagement with the San Lorenzo River. CWC invites the community to get involved today by calling (831) 464-9200 or visiting the CWC website at www.coastal-watershed.org.
BirchBark Foundation is the first of its kind in the Monterey Bay-Central Coast region. Founded in 2013 to address the critical needs of pet owners and their animals, BirchBark offers financial assistance and pet health education to help pet owners and the animal loving community become strong health advocates for all pets. To date BirchBark has saved the lives of 110 pets. BirchBark is a fiscally sponsored 501c3 nonprofit organization. Visit us at birchbarkfoundation.org or call (831) 462-6004 for more information.
WOOFPACK831 is a hiking day camp for dogs! As “pup parents,” we understand the importance of having trustworthy and experienced caregivers fostering our beloved pets; our family. On a typical day, our pack leaders pick up the dogs from their homes before 10 a.m., hike all over Santa Cruz and the surrounding areas on dog-friendly, on-leash trails and beaches, then drop them off nice and tired after 3 p.m. Using structured exercise, positive reinforcement, proper guidance and love, we create and maintain well-balanced, obedient pack mates. We are also licensed, bonded, insured, and certified in pet first aid and CPR. We truly believe it takes a village to raise a child, and in this case, it takes a pack. We are WOOFPACK831!
