Raul Midón at Kuumbwa Jazz

September 13 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

$27 - $32

Raul Midón has been astounding audiences since the release of his first album in 1999. Defying easy categorization, his ninth and most recent album is titled Bad Ass and Blind. Blind since birth, the New Mexico native is a most distinctive musician whose talent for guitar playing, songwriting and singing is unequaled. Midón has no use for musical barriers. Whether playing an imaginative cover of a Stevie Wonder or Steve Miller song, or one of his original compositions, Midón puts everything he has into his performances. Melodic lines, relentless grooves, he makes it all look easy. A featured performer with the 2016 Monterey Jazz Festival On Tour, Midón often stole the show with his soulfully rendered songs.

Born in 1966 in Embudo, New Mexico, Midón learned to play guitar as a young student at a school for the blind. Yet, it was his vocal talent that got him started as a professional musician, working as a backup singer on recording sessions for Shakira, Julio Iglesias and Jose Feliciano. Eager to pursue a solo career, Raul moved to New York City and began working with Little Louie Vega, a popular DJ and record producer. They teamed up to form Elements of Life and toured Europe, Japan, and Australia in 2003 and 2004. Soon after, Midón’s talent came to the attention of legendary producer Arif Mardin who signed him to Manhattan Records. Raul’s first album, State of Mind, debuted to critical raves.

After State of Mind, Raul’s career ballooned upwards. His music has been featured in three films, and Herbie Hancock featured him on his own 2006 album Possibilities. In the ensuing years, Midón has collaborated on recordings with a stunning array of creative artists that include Wonder, Jason Mraz, Larry Goldings, Vinnie Colaiuta, Marcus Miller, and vocalists Lizz Wright and Dianne Reeves. The New York Times has rightfully dubbed him, “a one-man band, beyond category and genre.”
