Intro to Screenprinting

February 24 @ 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Learn how to screenprint using the stencil method! This method is a great entry-level process for screenprinting and can be easily set up to do at home. Leave with an edition of 15 prints, hand printed and designed by YOU!

Cost: $75.00

Regitration: Must register in advance online at https://www.allhandsworkshops.com/events/2019/2/24/intro-to-screenprinting

In this workshop, we will:
learn the principles of screenprinting and its materials
cut a stencil of our own design out of contact paper using craft knives
learn proper squeegee form
pull 8.5×11 original screenprints from our own designs
learn how to sign and number a print edition

The following supplies are included:
everything needed to start screenprinting!
pencils and pens to draw design
contact paper film
craft knives
printing paper
water-based screenprinting inks in multiple colors
image inspiration and sample stencils

You can bring:
an apron or clothes you wouldn’t mind getting ink on; short sleeves are best!
optional: your own drawing or design (8.5×11 size). Bold blocky designs print best. We’ll go over this with time to design an image during the workshop as well.
optional: extra sheets of paper to print on (Louise will be providing up to 15 sheets of cardstock and proofing paper)

You will go home with:
up to 15 hand-pulled screenprints of your own design
a short written guide to screenprinting at home with a list of materials

For the stencil method of screenprinting, bold blocky designs print best. Thin lines can be printed but can be a little trickier. To print finer detail screenprints, I recommend the drawing fluid method which can be explored in a later workshop!

About Louise Leong
Louise Leong is an artist and maker of objects of amusement. Screenprints of sassy characters, handmade toys, and colorful graphic drawings inspired by snack packaging are her main body of work. Louise graduated from the University of California Santa Cruz after studying Studio Art and Education. She has taught art workshops for Youth Now!, a Watsonville-based after school program, Porter College at UCSC, and for the Prison Arts Project in the Santa Cruz County Jail.

Louise loves to talk shop about art-making tools as a result of her many years serving the artist community as a fixture and problem-solver at a local art supply store.

In 2018 she joined the Little Giant Collective of artist printmakers to open a new studio cooperative in downtown Santa Cruz, to open in February 2019. She lives in town with her wife, Ellen.

Louise will teach additional printmaking workshops at Little Giant Collective’s printmaking cooperative studio, opening February 2019 in the San Lorenzo Plaza Shopping Center (next to Mobo Sushi)!
