Leyla McCalla
Monday, September 25
Kuumbwa Jazz Center

Singing in French, Haitian Creole and English, Leyla McCalla also accompanies on cello, tenor banjo and guitar, all bringing to life a unique melding of her Haitian musical heritage with American jazz and folk. Her influences and sonic references reverberate with three centuries of history, yet remain strikingly fresh and vital. Her debut album, Vari-Colored Songs: A Tribute to Langston Hughes made many best-of lists and prompted The New York Times to praise its “…weighty thoughts handled with the lightest touch imaginable.” As McCalla states of her socially-conscious approach to music, “I can’t help but be inspired by history, as well as what’s going on today.” Her latest album, A Day For The Hunter, A Day For The Prey, continues in that spirit.

McCalla was born in New York City to Haitian immigrant parents was raised in suburban New Jersey (spending a couple teenage years in Accra, Ghana). Now a resident of New Orleans, McCalla feels a renewed sense of connection with her Haitian heritage in the Crescent City. “I feel very at home here,” she says. “The more I learned about the history of Louisiana, its ties to Haiti and French speaking culture, the more sense of belonging I felt and continue to feel.

The Boston Globe describes her music as “…at once varnished and sparse, like field recordings in high definition.” It’s a contemporary blend of influences that is filled with historic narrative. Half-price student tickets will be available at this concert date.
